Sedan Castle
Europe’s biggest fortified castle, steeped in 1,000 years of history!
Don your chain mail, put on your helmet, draw your sword from its scabbard, and set out to discover the biggest medieval fortress in Europe! With its imposing and massive silhouette on the edge of the Ardennes forest, Sedan castle dominates the city with its stature.
Owned by the princes of Sedan, this fortress became French in 1642, when the principality of Sedan became part of the kingdom of France. Starting from 1424, this building, which houses 1,000 years of history, took a century and a half to build.
Impressive from the outside, it is equally dazzling within: its 35,000 m² area is capable of sheltering up to 4,000 men, while its impressive walls are 7 meters wide, with the thickest measuring around 27 meters!
This castle, which has regained its former glory following several restoration campaigns, is presented to you via its "historium", its tours with a costumed guide, its museum, or its 4-star hotel inside the fortified enclosure.
Several events are also organized in summer at this exceptional site: knight tournaments take place in summer, while a medieval festival plunges the whole city back into its glorious past.
