An armory and history museum perched on a rocky spur

Head to the Citadel of Dinant and discover nine centuries of history! Get there by taking the cable car, or on foot for the bravest among you, as there are 408 steps. When you arrive at the summit, you will be rewarded with an exceptional panorama of the Meuse and one of the most beautiful valleys in Belgium!

Constructed on the site of an old fort, which was built by Vauban then dismantled and was itself installed on the ruins of a castle from the 11th century, this citadel is revealed to you via the guided tour. You will discover its history, from the looting of Dinant in 1466 to the 14–18 war, not forgetting the period of Louis XIV and Vauban. The Arms Museum will fascinate fans of this field, while different rooms feature characters from the era.

In addition to the explanations provided by the guide, you will find objects and educational panels along the route, which retrace the glorious past of Dinant, a city nicknamed the "Daughter of the Meuse".

A witness to ferocious combat in August 1914, when the French and German armies fought each other, a space is dedicated to these important events in Belgian and European history. Do not miss the reconstruction of an anti-aircraft shelter that collapsed after a bombing. “Strong” emotions guaranteed!
