Exhibition - Impressionism in Belgium
The Musée de La Boverie is hosting a unique exhibition dedicated to Impressionism in Belgium, shedding light on a facet of this major modern art movement that remains all too little known.
Although often associated with its iconic French figures, Impressionism nevertheless found an original and early resonance in Belgium. As early as the 1860s, Belgian artists were distancing themselves from academic art, embracing new forms of pictorial expression that foreshadowed Impressionism. The exhibition will trace this artistic ferment, from the early days of the Société Libre des Beaux-Arts to the emergence of Belgian Luminism.
Around a hundred works will be brought together in the bright and elegant spaces of La Boverie, creating an exceptional dialogue between the French masters (Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, Sisley…) and their Belgian counterparts (Ensor, Claus, Lemmen, Van Rysselberghe…). This unique side-by-side exhibition will explore cross-influences, national distinctiveness and parallel artistic paths, within an ambitious and resolutely contemporary exhibition design that also gives pride of place to multimedia and interactive installations.
