Clervaux
A medieval town with a rich religious past
Its picturesque nature, its castle, and its natural setting in the valley of the river Clerve makes Clervaux a very popular attraction and one of the cities most visited by tourists in Luxembourg.
A majestic castle housing a global exhibition
Clervaux is overlooked by a 12th-century castle that was beautifully restored after its destruction during the Second World War. It houses the permanent exhibition “The Family of Man”, the famous photographic collection that has been part of the UNESCO Memory of the World since 2003.
This collection comprises no less than 503 photographs from 273 photographers, brought together by Edward Steichen for the Museum of Modern Art of New York (MoMA). Presented for the first time in 1955, this exhibition is a manifesto for peace and fundamental equality through postwar humanist photography. The images from authors such as Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Dorothea Lange, Robert Doisneau, as well as August Sander and Ansel Adams, are presented in a modernist and spectacular way.
This spectacular site also hosts the museum of models of castles and strongholds of Luxembourg and the Museum of the Battle of the Bulge, which exhibits documents, uniforms, and weapons used during this conflict.
A city rich in religious history and heritage
In addition to its castle, Clervaux has also conserved a Roman church, as well as the imposing and impressive Saint-Maurice-and-Saint-Maur abbey. Founded in 1909, today this Benedictine abbey houses an international community of around thirty monks.
Located in the heart of the Our Nature Park
Clervaux is part of the superb Our Nature Park, which was officially created in 2005 and is found in the north east of Luxembourg. This is your chance to enjoy this magnificent natural environment through numerous walks in the region!
