Exhibition – César Franck
Discover the person who radically transformed French music
Have you heard of César Franck? This Liège composer revolutionized French music in the 19th century. It was quite fitting, then, for the City of Liège to dedicate an exhibition to him (open until 1 January 2024) on the bicentenary of his birth. This event is organized in collaboration with the Liège Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
This is a chance for fans to admire musical instruments, such as the iconic console (keyboards, pedals, and accessories) of the Cavaillé-Coll organ which César Franck owned at the Basilica of Saint Clotilde in Paris. The original manuscript of the Symphonic Variations for piano and orchestra, numerous documents and testimonials from the period, along with press articles about his early concerts can also be discovered, among other things.
This César Franck Space thus complements the presence of great Liège composers in the heart of the city, which is highlighted by the Grétry Museum in Outremeuse and Studio Ysaÿe at the Curtius. These cultural establishments allow you to find out more about the exceptional and intertwined destinies of these two great musicians from the 19th century.
In addition to this exhibition space, the City of Liège is working with OPRL to offer concerts and guided tours in the city.
