Malmedy
Folklore, beers, and monastery
This lively and friendly city, which is located in the eastern cantons at the heart of the Belgian Ardennes, is one of the top tourist sites in the province of Liège and offers you some nice surprises.
A major cultural and historical center
A perfect mix of culture and nature, the small tourist city of Malmedy makes strong arguments for a visit: firstly, its particularly ornate city center and its majestic cathedral, as well as its old monastery, which has been transformed into a cultural and tourist center, the Malmundarium.
This tourist site offers interesting information on the city’s past, notably on the history of the paper and leather industries which shaped its history. The traditions of its carnival, the Cwarmé, are also covered with fun musical staging.
The capital of outdoor activities
It enjoys an exceptional natural setting by being located near the Hautes Fagnes nature reserve, at the confluence of two rivers (the Warche and the Warchenne) and in the bottom of a green valley. Its exceptional sites and its many marked trails, which can be enjoyed on foot or by bike, are a real paradise for all nature lovers.
The Haute Fagnes Nature Park is undoubtedly one of these leading tourist sites. The area notably includes the oldest and largest nature reserve in Belgium. This is a “must” for walkers and hikers, who visit to discover a unique place in Europe due to its flora and fauna. This is not to mention Maison du Parc-Botrange and its Fania museum, a veritable meeting place for nature lovers and hikers.
Take a moment to relax by the water
The Robertville lake and dam will satisfy those who wish to enjoy a variety of activities (fishing, swimming in the lake, boating, beach games, and signposted walks); Butgenbach lake, which lies in the heart of the Warche valley, will delight water-sports fans (kayaking, windsurfing), while the Eupen lake and dam, which is sometimes called the "Vesdre dam", is 63 meters high and will delight those in search of exceptional views and photographs.
Experience one of the most famous carnivals in Belgium
The eastern cantons, more specifically the city of Malmedy, are particularly famous for their carnivals. The “Cwarmê”, the name of the Malmedy carnival takes place each year with 4 days of festivities, reflects the friendliness and authenticity of the Malmedy locals.
This popular traditional festival, which is part of the intangible heritage of the Wallonia-Brussels community, features the famous traditional masks and their "Haguètes" dance, waving their "happe-chair".
The carnivals of Eupen and Calamine, which take place just a few kilometers from Malmedy, are also very well-known.
