Namur
A listed citadel between the Sambre and the Meuse
It is impossible to miss Namur, the capital of Wallonia! The gateway to the Ardennes, at the crossroads of the Sambre and the Meuse, this city has a rare and spectacular atmosphere and is mainly known for its magnificent citadel.
A medieval vestige of inestimable value
You can’t visit Namur without visiting its citadel, which has always occupied a strategic position in the heart of Europe and which today bears witness to 2,000 years of history.
Known as the “termite mound of Europe” for its extensive network of galleries, this tourist site allows you to discover more than 500 meters of restored galleries via an immersive guided tour, in order to discover its inner depths. The explanations are supplemented by 3D animations, projections, and sound effects.
The visitor center, located in the former Terra Nova barrack, retraces 2,000 years of European urban and military history through the history of Namur and its citadel.
Covering 80 hectares of green spaces, the citadel also offers magnificent views over the Walloon capital and the Meuse valley.
Don't forget the little tourist train that tours the fortifications and provides commentary.
An unmissable historic city center!
Namur city center has so much to offer that it would be a shame not to take some time to have a walk around. Enjoy its beautiful residences from the 18th century, its superb Place d'Armes, its Belfry, Theater, its Walloon Parliament, or even its Bishopric. Don't forget the Place du Marché aux légumes, which is home to the oldest café in Namur.
If you do not want to stop at all of the sites that evoke the rich heritage of the city, it does not matter! Just walk around old Namur: its numerous pedestrianized streets, its cobbled streets, and its Art Deco storefronts, which possess an overwhelming charm, will allow you to discover it in another way.
Finally, the many museums in the city center offer yet another way to discover this city. Visit the TreM.a, the Museum of Ancient Arts of Namur, the Museum of Decorative Arts, but especially the Félicien Rops Museum, which is located in a former mansion.
Just like in Huy or Liège, Namur also offers cruises
Other must-dos during a visit to Namur: the cruises!
Several cruises are offered from Namur: Namur-Sambre and the Meuse (50 min), Namur-Wépion (1 hr 45 mins), and Namur-Dinant (2 hr). Another way of discovering the Haute-Meuse and its magnificent landscapes!
