The Fiery City and its surrounding regions revealed
- 3 days
- 2 nights
DescriptionSuccumb to the appeal of this tour combining sumptuous historic sites, iconic cultural landmarks and intoxicating local flavours
On this tour, you’ll discover the Fiery City and “Greater Liège”. The programme will begin with a guided tour of the city, which is currently undergoing a process of modernisation and is continuing to enhance its heritage and offer attractive tourist sites. Situated on the threshold of the Ardennes, the Ourthe-Vesdre-Amblève region is considered to be the garden of the city of Liège. You’ll have the chance to spend a day in this region, where rivers have carved out valleys and created breathtaking panoramas. Finally, the Pays de Herve is the last stop on your tour, with a remarkable landscape of hedged farmland and orchards.
The first day in Liège will take you on an exploration of its history, with a guided tour of the historical centre and the old Island Quarter. What’s more, you’ll also have the chance to discover the interior of one of the three iconic sites in the city centre: the Opera, the Palace of the Prince-Bishops (provincial wing) or the Théâtre de Liège (your choice, depending on your wishes and the availability of the sites on the date you choose). After a refreshment break when you can savour Liège’s specialities, you will continue the day on a historical theme with the Cité Miroir. Set in the unusual surroundings of the former Sauvenière baths, this place helps you to better understand the past, opening up memory as inspiration for a better future. Finally, you’ll have an hour’s free time to do a bit of shopping, have a drink on the terrace or relax in the park.
The second day will be spent in the Ourthe-Vesdre-Amblève region. Particularly blessed by Mother Nature, this area just a few minutes from Liège is full of impressive natural sites. You’ll start by exploring the Caves of Remouchamps.
A natural phenomenon shaped over the centuries, the caves are a prime activity in the Ardennes. For 75 minutes, you will travel to the centre of the earth in a magical and mysterious universe. You will then enjoy a gourmet treat at Avouerie Castle of Anthisnes, where you will also spend the afternoon. You will wander through this former residence of the ‘Haut-Voués’, which includes a 17th century castle and a 12th century defensive keep.
After a good night’s sleep, you’ll embark on your third and final day. Blegny-Mine will be the first site on your route. Nestling in the heart of the verdant Pays de Herve, this authentic colliery is one of only four original coal mines in Europe whose underground galleries are accessible to visitors via the original shaft. Discover its secrets by descending into the underground galleries. You will then head to a spiritual destination, Val-Dieu Abbey. You will start the day with a bite to eat at the “Casse-Croûte du Val-Dieu”, a small restaurant housed in the Abbey stables, before taking a more detailed tour of this haven of peace. Two local producers will be on the afternoon programme: the Fromagerie du Vieux Moulin, with its famous Herve raw-milk cheese (as well as its various artisanal dairy products) and the Artisanal syrup factory of Aubel, which continues the tradition of making cordial according to an ancestral recipe.
Duration: 3 days/2 nights.
